Discover the GENAI4EARTH Project
OUR MISSION
GenAI4Earth aims to unlock the potential of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) for Earth System Sciences by designing, deploying, and operating reusable and trustworthy GenAI services to advance our understanding of the Earth’s climate, environment, and life interactions. Our goal is to integrate FAIR data, models, and workflows into the EOSC ecosystem to foster standards, best practices, and confidence in AI-enabled data spaces and foundation models.
The project is funded by Horizon Europe (GA 101293266) and will run from September 2026 to August 2029.
KEY OBJECTIVES
Develop GenAI tools to enhance FAIRness, machine-actionability, AI-readiness, and provenance of ESS data and services.
Implement AI-powered interfaces for seamless discovery, access, and cross-domain integration.
Promote responsible AI with reproducibility, explainability, transparency, and frugal computing
Build capacity via training and engagement to ensure broad uptake of GenAI-enabled workflows
USE CASES
The tools and services developed within the project will be demonstrated through three scientific pilots:
- Urban Environments: Developing tailored foundation models to detect environmental changes, monitor climate stress, and assess risks in urban areas.
- Agro-Forestry Environments: Developing GenAI methods for trait-based phenotyping of crops and forest species to improve food security, sustainable agriculture, and forest resilience.
- Seismology: Integrating conventional seismology with emerging Fiber-Optics Distributed Acoustic Sensing (FO-DAS) data to detect and forecast natural hazards in complex geophysical settings.
